Cardston Junior Cougars run to SAMFA title
The Cardston Junior Cougars are this year’s Southern Alberta Minor Football Association Division A champions.
Capping off a full day of bantam football at the University of Lethbridge Stadium, the Junior Cougars defeated the Lethbridge Junior Rams 27-6.
For the Junior Cougars, Jace Nish scored two touchdowns while twin brother Max added another.
Both teams are moving on to the Football Alberta Bantam provincials next weekend.
The Junior Cougars host the Calgary Bantam Stampeders Saturday at the U of L Stadium. The tentative game time is 11 a.m.
Meanwhile, the Junior Rams head to Fort Saskatchewan Saturday at 4 p.m.
In the Division B final, the Lethbridge Junior Cougars beat the Taber Rebels 42-24 as Lethbridge’s Derek Trapp scored three touchdowns.
The Junior Cougars hit the road Saturday to play either Red Deer or Lacombe.
In the House League championship, the Lethbridge Junior Bulldogs topped the Claresholm Cobras 42-20.
Josh McBeath had three touchdowns — two running and one receiving — for the Junior Bulldogs.
The SAMFA individual awards were also give out Saturday.
In Division A, Cardston took home three awards as Jace Nish was named the Most Valuable Player, Brysen Scott earned the Top Offensive Player Award and Hunter Bultsma was chosen as the Top Defensive Player.
The Junior Rams also earned three awards.
Carson Procee was named the Most Sportsmanlike Player, Crew Hirsche won the President’s Award and Cole Dore won Most Outstanding Lineman.
Raymond’s Houston Ralph (Top Grade 7), Brock Barnett (Top Grade 8) and Ashton Witbeck (Top Special Teams Player) were the other Division A award winners.
In Division B, Trapp was named the Most Valuable Player, while Taber’s Cohen Broadbent and Aiden O’Connor won the Most Outstanding Lineman and Top Offensive Player awards, respectively.
Magrath’s Bryson Clifton won the Top Grade 7 Player award and teammate Tanner Morales was selected as the Top Special Teams Player.
McBeath won the Most Outstanding Rookie award, Claresholm’s Logan Read (Most Sportsmanlike Player) and Cale Strom (Top Defensive Player) were the other Division B award winners.
