Copperheads fall short of 2-0 weekend
The Coaldale Copperheads started the weekend with a home win, but were unable to earn a second win on the road.
The Copperheads topped the Mountainview Colts 5-3 in Heritage Junior Hockey League play Saturday night at the Coaldale Sportsplex, but were doubled up on the road Sunday, losing 6-3 to the Strathmore Wheatland Kings in Strathmore as the hosts lit it up late for the win.
The .500 weekend keeps Coaldale in second place in the Southern Division at 9-2-2, four points back of the Okotoks Bisons (11-2-2).
On Saturday in Coaldale, the Copperheads scored twice in the first and second periods for a 4-1 lead after 40 minutes, enough to stave off a pair of late Colts goals for the 5-3 win.
Sam Rousseau, Tyler Anderson, Brandyn Howg, Ty Abbott and Jared Bainbridge scored for Coaldale.
Howg and Tyler Anderson added an assist for two points and Turner Sharp and Jayden Bexte each had two helpers.
Copperheads goaltender Nolan Berner stopped 31 shots in the win.
On Sunday, the Copperheads had a 3-0 lead after two periods, but the Wheatland Kings rocked Coaldale for six third period goals — three on the man advantage — for the comefrom-behind win.
The Copperheads will get another shot at Strathmore Saturday when the Wheatland Kings pay a visit to the Coaldale Sportsplex. Game time is 8:30 p.m.
On Sunday, Coaldale plays a makeup game against the Three Hills Thrashers at 2:30 p.m. at the Coaldale Sportsplex.
