Pronghorns’ Duguid named to Canadian senior team

The rugby season isn’t over for one member of the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women.

Only weeks removed from the Canada West season, Pronghorn forward Abby Duguid has been named to the Canadian Women’s Senior Team for the Fall Tour in the United Kingdom.

Duguid, who played with the Canadian U20 team this past fall, just completed her fourth season with the Pronghorns. She led the Pronghorns in scoring in league play and was named a Canada West All-Star and a Second Team All-Canadian.

“Being selected for the upcoming fall tour with the senior national team has been a goal of mine for years and this is the next step for me on my rugby journey,” said Duguid on being named to the team for the first time. “After playing with the Under 20 squad the past two summers I have wanted to go that one step further. This is my opportunity to transition to a faster and more physically demanding level which is something that will push me harder than before.

“It is an honour to be part of the national team and to be able to play with the best players in the country in a program that has been built by some incredible alumni is something I am looking forward to.”

The senior national team will leave Sunday for the tour and will play three games over a nine-day span, starting on Nov. 18 against England in Leeds England, followed by a match with Wales in Cardiff on Nov. 24. The tour will conclude in Glasgow, Scotland on Nov. 27 against the Scottish National team.

“Being a part of the Pronghorns has made this goal possible, the support staff, coaching staff and my teammates over the past four years have allowed me to grow and develop as an athlete. Without the Horns I wouldn’t have had this great opportunity and I am very grateful for the support,” added Duguid.
