Basketball players take Horn honours

-

Basketball scored the slam dunk as the University of Lethbridge announced its Two Guys and a Pizza Place Pronghorn Athletes of the Week Tuesday.

Winning the Female Athlete of the Week is fourth-year veteran Kacie Bosch, while Mike Pierzchala takes home the Male Athlete of the Week honour.

As they began their Canada West season, Bosch helped the Horns to a sweep of the MacEwan Griffins with 28 points, five rebounds, six steals and two assists.

In the Pronghorns 78-54 win Friday, Bosch scored 11 points in only 14 minutes of action before leaving the game due to injury. She also added three rebounds and three steals.

On Saturday, wearing a protective facemask, Bosch led Pronghorn scorers with 17 points on seven of 12 shooting, including hitting three from behind the arc, in a 69-50 win. She added another three steals and two rebounds.

In his return to the team after sitting out last season, Pierzchala — a fourth-year forward — combined for 43 points, nine rebounds, three steals and a block in the weekend sweep.

In the opener Friday night, Pierzchala led all scorers with 23 points in a 92-54 win, shooting 58.3 per cent from the field, including three of eight from long range. He added three rebounds and one block.

On Saturday, Pierzchala added another 20 points, six rebounds and three steals in the Pronghorns 96-79 win.

Through the first two conference games of the season, Pierzchala sits tied for fifth in Canada West scoring, averaging 21.5 points.
