Why we remember ...

- Caroline Moynihan

Every Nov. 11 we pause at 11:11 a.m. to pay tribute to the battlefield sacrifices and post-combat concerns of the men and women who served our country in wartime. Here are just a few resources to help us never forget:

“Three Day Road” – Joseph Boyden. An awardwinning look at two Cree men sent to fight in France during the Second World War. When only one returns, Niska, a medicine woman, seeks to heal her only relative with stories from her own past.

“Everyday Heroes” – Jody Mitic. A collection of firstperson essays written by members of the Canadian Armed Forces.

“By Chance Alone” – Max Eisen. In this moving memoir, Holocaust survivor Max Eisen recounts the horrors he witnessed during the Second World War, and how he travels the world educating future generations.

“Lost in September” – Kathleen Winter. Centred around a mysterious homeless man who believes himself to be the reincarnation of British General James Wolfe, this novel looks at the traumatic effects of PTSD.

“Into the Blizzard” – Michael Winter. This book is a stunning look at the Newfoundland Regiment, and the famous Battle at Beaumont Hamel.

“The Great Escape: A Canadian Story” – Theodore Barris. This true story begins on the night of March 24, 1944, when 80 Commonwealth airmen crawled through a 336-foot-long tunnel to a German POW camp; their mission, to rescue more than 2,000 prisoners of war.

“Everyone Brave is Forgiven” – Chris Cleave. Set during the Second World War, and loosely based on the author’s own grandparents, this is a strikingly honest look at the changes that war creates on a country’s landscape and its people.

“Joyeux Noel” – DVD, 2006. During Christmas in 1914, an unofficial truce on the Western Front allowed soldiers from opposing sides of the First World War to understand each other’s way of life.

“Passchendaele” – DVD, 2009. This is a touching fictionalized account of a Canadian soldier, Michael Dunne, at the Battle of Passchendaele, also known as the Third Battle of Ypres.

This is just a small selection of great titles offered at your Lethbridge Public Library. For even more choices talk to our library staff to see what they are reading.
