CCH earns spots in 4A South Zone volleyball finals

Catholic Central Cougars boys and girls advanced to their respective championsh­ip matches after preliminar­y play at the South Zone 4A High School Volleyball Championsh­ips on Friday.

At the Catholic Central West campus, the host Cougars went undefeated in their two matches on Friday to move on to the girls’ title game today at 1:30 p.m.

Cougars defeated Chinook Coyotes 2-1 by scores of 25-16, 22-25 and 15-13.

Amaya Perry led the Cougars with 15 kills, a block and three aces while Jana Dyck also added three aces.

Lauren Follett replied with five kills, a block and two aces for the Coyotes and Kara Kotkas added five kills and two aces.

CCH also defeated Medicine Hat Kwahommies 2-1 by scores of 20-25, 2519 and 15-10.

Cait MacMillan had 12 kills and two blocks in a losing cause.

Chinook dropped its second match of the day to the Kwahommies, 23-25, 19-25, setting up a semifinal rematch with the Hat today at 10:30 a.m.

Meanwhile next door at Chinook High, the CCH Cougars were also 2-0 after preliminar­y play Friday, earning a spot in today’s title match, also at 1:30 p.m.

Cougars defeated the host Coyotes 2-1 by scores of 25-27, 25-22 and 15-10.

Jens Watt and Jack Gaehring led CCH with seven and six kills respective­ly. Matthew Sargeant replied with eight kills for Chinook.

Cougars also went three sets with the Medicine Hat High Mohawks before prevailing 25-20, 24-26 and 15-3.

Gaehring had eight kills and four blocks for the winners and Watt added six kills and two blocks.

Chinook finished the day at 1-1 after a 27-25, 25-19 win over Hat High. The teams will meet again today at 10:30 a.m. in the semifinal with the winner advancing to play CCH.

All of today’s matches are five sets.
