Kodiaks win on the road

-

In their final road game of the first half, the Lethbridge College Kodiaks women’s and men’s basketball teams didn’t come home empty-handed.

The Kodiaks were in Caronport, Sask. to take on the Briercrest Clippers in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference Saturday with the visitors scoring a sweep.

The women’s team eked out a close win with a 66-64 decision, while the men’s team earned a bit more of a convincing win with an 88-72 victory.

In the women’s game, the Clippers started with a 9-0 run, but the Kodiaks responded with a 20-point second quarter for a 34-30 lead at halftime.

Kodiaks leading scorer Juhee Anderson once again paced her team with 22 points — including two clutch free throws in the final 30 seconds — while Jocelyn Neilson hit for 10. Anderson also had five assists.

Neilson and Courtney Peterson also hauled in 10 rebounds each.

The win gives the 5-2 Kodiaks third place in the ACAC South Division, two points behind the Olds Broncos (6-2) and two ahead of the 4-3 Calgary St. Mary’s University Lightning.

In the men’s game, Orin Porter Jr. and Lincoln Anderson continued to put up big numbers with 27 and 26 points, respectively. Anderson also had 18 rebounds.

Daniel Lybbert chipped in with 11 points for Lethbridge, while Michael Clemons had 10 assists.

Clemons also had two steals and moved to within three of all-time leader and former Clipper James Wohgeshaffen, who holds the current mark at 209.

The Kodiaks wrap up the first semester Saturday at home when the Red Deer Kings and Queens pay a visit to the Val Matteotti Gymnasium.

The women’s game is at 6 p.m. with the men to follow at 8 p.m.

The Red Deer women’s team is 1-6, while the men are 4-3.
