Volleyball teams headed to provincial­s

Seven South Zone volleyball teams are headed to the 1A and 2A boys and girls provincial­s this weekend.

The Val Matteotti Gymnasium at Lethbridge College was the site of the 1A and 2A South Zone Volleyball Championsh­ips Thursday to Saturday.

Now, two 1A boys, 2A boys, 2A girls and one 1A girls team are headed to provincial­s following the gold medal games Saturday.

In the 1A girls gold medal game, the Picture Butte Sugar Queens downed the Milk River Erle Rivers Novas 2-0 (25-14, 25-20) to earn this year’s South Zone.

The Sugar Queens, who went 3-0 in the round-robin and beat the Stirling Lakers 20 (25-16, 25-19) in the semifinal are the sole South representa­tives as they travel to Bassano for 1A provincial­s.

In the 1A girls bronze medal game, the Bow Island Senator Gershaw Gators beat the Lakers 2-1 (25-15, 21-25, 15-13).

In the remaining age categories, the South Zone will send two teams.

Headed to Bashaw for the 1A boys provincial­s are the Senator Gershaw Gators and the Brant Christian Eagles.

The Gators beat the Eagles 2-0 (25-15, 25-23) in the gold medal game.

The Gators were 2-0 in the round-robin and beat the Nobleford Noble Central Blades 2-0 (25-20, 25-9) in the semfinal.

The Eagles were 1-1 after the round-robin and earned their zone final and provincial berth thanks to a 2-0 win (25-21, 25-21) decision over the Pincher Creek St. Michael’s Dragons

The Dragons defeated the Blades 2-0 (25-23, 2521) in the 1A boys bronze medal game.

The Vauxhall Queens and Magrath Pandas will represent the south at the 2A girls provincial­s in Camrose.

The Queens won the South gold medal over the Pandas with a 2-0 win (254, 25-8).

Vauxhall was a perfect 4-0 in the round-robin and kept it going in the semifinal with a 2-0 win (25-15, 25-22) over the Taber St. Mary’s Auroras.

Magrath was 3-1 in the round-robin and topped the Fort Macleod F.P. Walshe Flyers 2-1 (20-25, 25-20, 15-6) in the semifinal.

The Auroras went on to win the 2A girls bronze with a 2-0 victory (25-14, 25-18) over the Flyers.

The 2A boys duo of the Immanuel Christian Eagles and the Vauxhall Vikings are also headed to Camrose as the South Zone reps.

The Eagles got past the Vikings 2-0 (25-19, 25-23) in the gold medal game after going 2-0 in the round-robin and defeating the Coaldale Kate Andrews Pride 2-0 (25-12, 25-15) in the semifinal.

The Vikings were 1-1 in the round-robin and got past the Taber St. Mary’s Celtics 2-0 (25-18, 26-24) in the semifinal.

The Celtics won the 2A bronze with a 2-0 win (25-20, 25-21) over the Pride.

All provincial championsh­ips start Thursday and go until Saturday.
