College looking to connect with, honour distinguished alumni
Do you know someone who has made a significant contribution in their field of study and the workforce? Lethbridge College wants to give recognition to those who have truly made a difference with the 2019 Honouring Excellence Alumni Awards.
With nearly 40,000 alumni across the world, Lethbridge College wants to properly recognize those accomplishments by asking people to nominate successful alumni who have stood out in their community.
Sydney Wakaruk, Lethbridge College Alumni Relations Coordinator, said they want to know what their alumni are doing since their time at the college.
“There’s so many people doing exceptional work and we want to honour that. There’s a lot of doers, thinkers, industry leaders and community influences in Lethbridge and all over the world,” said Wakaruk. “We want to recognize them for their hard work and show that they got their start at Lethbridge College, and how we contributed to their success.”
Lethbridge College wants alumni to stay connected and to let them know that once they’re a student they’re an alumni for life.
The four award categories are: Distinguished Alumni; Career Viruoso; Community Leader; and Rising Star. The Distinguished Alumni award was established in 1992 for the college’s 35th anniversary.
Since 1992, more than 85 graduates have received alumni awards from the college. This year, the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni award was Kathy Veres Sassa (Nursing 1991).
The award celebration will take place April 25, 2019 in the Garden Court Dining Room at Lethbridge College.
Nominations are open until Jan. 15 and accomplished alumni can also nominate themselves.
Information on the categories and nomination forms are available at lethbridgecollege.ca/honouringe xcellence.
Alumni are the focal point this weekend at the college with the My Kodiaks Moments online giving campaign that launched on Thursday helping student-athletes continue to shine on and off the court.
All proceeds and donations from the campaign go toward helping alleviate any financial burdens placed on studentathletes. The funds will go directly to Kodiak Athletics scholarships.
Todd Caughlin, Lethbridge College manager of Kodiak Athletics, said scholarships are more than a financial benefit.
“Athletics scholarships allows them to focus on the three pillars that we also focus on in Kodiak athletics which is to hold students academically accountable, succeed on the court and get involved in the community,” said Caughlin.
Caughlin adds that preparing student-athletes to win, but in the right way, is the Kodiaks’ way. They also pride themselves on the saying “once a Kodiak, always a Kodiak.”
The My Kodiaks Moments campaign will run until Dec. 6. For those interested in donating, visit
