A 28-year-old woman arrested following a traffic stop in Cardston is headed to jail, but only on weekends.

Megan Lynne Laube pleaded guilty Thursday in Lethbridge provincial court to five counts of breaching court orders, and single counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, knowing there is a gun in a vehicle, possession of a stolen licence plate, and drug possession.

Laube was sentenced to four months in jail; however, she was given credit for the equivalent of nearly two months previously spent in custody, leaving 66 days on her sentence, which she will serve on weekends.

Court was told Laube was a passenger in a vehicle RCMP approached while it was stopped at a business in Cardston about 8 p.m. Oct. 6. Police, Crown prosecutor Bruce Ainscough explained, were searching for the accused and suspected she may be in the vehicle.

They found Laube with three others, and during a search also found a small amount of methamphetamine, alcohol, a pellet handgun and a sawed off shotgun. Police also discovered Laube had previously been ordered not to have any contact with two of the individuals in the vehicle, and she was not to possess any alcohol or drugs. And even though Laube owned the vehicle, the licence plate did not match and had been stolen in Lethbridge.

Defence noted Laube, who was sentenced earlier this month to 30 days in jail — with time served — for thefts from a business in the Taber area, has not previously been in trouble with the law. He asked his client be allowed to serve her sentence on weekends, which would enable her to continue working.
