OWC gets behind ‘Giving Tuesday’
ANNUAL DONATION PROGRAM FOLLOWS BLACK FRIDAY SALES
Giving Tuesday will take place worldwide on Nov. 27 and the Oldman Watershed Council (OWC) is doing their part to give to help the environment.
Diane Herrick, Fund Development Specialist for the OWC, says they are doing a text-to-donate campaign where people can text H2O (the letter O) to number 20222 and they will be asked if they would like to donate $10 or $20. The donation will appear on their next phone bill.
Additionally, Herrick says that people can buy a tree for $50 and the tree will be planted along the Oldman River next year during the next restoration project. People who donate this way will receive a certificate to be given to the person who the tree will be planted in honour of in memory of.
“Giving Tuesday is a global movement for giving and volunteering, taking place each year after Black Friday,” Herrick said. “It’s a time when charities, companies and individuals join together and rally for favourite causes. In the same way that retailers take part in Black Friday, the giving community comes together for Giving Tuesday.”
Herrick says that Giving Tuesday harnesses the potential of social media and the generosity of people around the world to bring about real change in their communities. Giving Tuesday provides a platform to encourage the donation of time, resources and talents to address local challenges.
It also brings together the collective power of a unique blend of partners — non-profit, civic organizations, businesses and corporations, as well as families and individuals — to encourage and amplify small acts of kindness.
Giving Tuesday, Herrick says, was launched in 2013 and since then it has engaged more than 6,000 Canadian businesses and charities in multiple forms of giving, driving significant increases in online donations, volunteering and other forms of generosity.
“This is an excellent opportunity for nonprofit organizations to work together on a global fundraising initiative,” Herrick said. “Giving Tuesday unites communities across Canada and across the world by sharing our capacity to care for and empower one another.”
