Area school choir concerts at Southminster

- Dave Mabell LETHBRIDGE HERALD

School choirs from across southern Alberta will be bringing Christmas songs downtown this week, starting with a concert at 7 p.m. today.

The musical celebrations, presented by the Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra, will continue Wednesday and Thursday at Southminster United Church.

“We had so much interest this year, that we’ve added a third night,” says symphony association executive director Melanie Gattiker.

Concerts have sold out in previous years, she adds, advising ticket purchase ($6) online to avoid disappointment.

Tonight’s performers will be the junior and senior choirs from Coalbanks Elementary, the St. Teresa Elementary School Choir, the Nord-Bridge ConMoto Singers and the St. Mary’s Choir from Okotoks.

On Wednesday, choirs from Westlake and Dr. Hamman Schools in Taber will be featured along with junior and senior choirs from Dr. Probe School in Lethbridge.

And Thursday, the Magrath Elementary School Choir will join singers from Westminster School, the junior and senior choirs from École Nicholas Sheran School and the Lakeview Elementary School Choir.

Each has selected different music, Gattiker says. The choirs will be accompanied by a small chamber orchestra, using musical settings arranged for the occasion.

“This means every concert is different,” she says.

But each will end with massed choirs singing “We Wish You a Merry Christmas!” Tickets for each evening are available online —

— with any remaining sold for $8 at the door. Gattiker says everyone will require a ticket, regardless of age, but tickets for children under two are free.

“Last year we sold out all of these concerts,” she adds. “They’re awfully popular.”
