Fowl play investigated

- Greg Bobinec LETHBRIDGE HERALD

Lethbridge Animal Control officers responded to three calls regarding a loose chicken in retail stores around the city.

Last Saturday, between 8:10 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., Animal Control officers responded to calls at both of the city’s Walmarts and the Spencer’s store in Park Place mall. Officers were able to successfully capture all three birds, which are all in good health, and are now being held at the Lethbridge Animal Shelter.

Animal Control officers believe the birds may have been stolen and let loose in the stores as a prank, with none of the birds having identification.

The Animal Shelter is hoping to reunite the chickens with their true owner and is asking anyone who may be missing chickens to contact their office.

The responding officers are continuing to work with store security to review surveillance footage to gather more information regarding who may have brought the birds into the stores.

Animal Control officers are investigating the matter under the Wild and Domestic Animals Bylaw, and any information regarding a possible theft of birds will be forwarded to the police.

Anyone who may have information about where the birds came from, or witnessed anything in relation to the incident on Saturday, is encouraged to contact the Animal Control office at 403-320-4099.
