Fritzke, Guyn named Pronghorn Athletes of the week

Danielle Fritzke of the University of Lethbridge women’s basketball team and Owen Guyn of the men’s swimming squad have been named Two Guys and a Pizza Place Pronghorn Athletes of the Week.

Fritzke, a fifth-year guard, combined for 34 points and six rebounds to help the women’s basketball team earn a weekend split with the visiting Winnipeg Wesmen.

Friday night, the Medicine Hat product scored 11 points and added three rebounds, two assists and a steal in the Pronghorns loss. Saturday, Fritzke sparked the Pronghorn offence in a 76-63 victory. She hit six threepoint­ers to lead the Pronghorns with 23 points and also added three rebounds and three assists.

Fritzke is averaging 9.3 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game this season.

The Pronghorns wrap up the first semester of conference action this week, facing the Calgary Dinos in a home-and-home series, beginning Thursday night in Lethbridge.

Guyn, competing in his final Canada West Championsh­ips, had an exceptiona­l performanc­e and helped the Pronghorn men to a sixth-place finish in a tight race with Alberta and Regina in the men’s team standings.

A 2017 Canada West bronze medallist, Guyn improved on last year’s performanc­e with a silver medal in the 50-metre freestyle and help the Pronghorn relay team win their first medal since 2014 in the 4x100 freestyle with a bronze medal finish.

A fifth-year Pronghorn, Guyn was also fifth in the 100-metre freestyle.

At the conclusion of the meet, the local product was recognized as the Canada West Men’s Student-Athlete Community Service Award winner and will be the Canada West nominee for the national award at the U SPORTS Championsh­ip in Vancouver in February.
