Horns athletes recognized as Academic All-Canadians
The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns athletics have enjoyed another strong year in the classroom.
This past year, 71 Pronghorn student-athletes achieved the status of Academic All-Canadians, recognizing students who excel in sport while maintaining an 80 per cent average in academics.
Last year, 74 Pronghorn athletes were named Academic All-Canadians, up from 63 the previous year.
The 71 Pronghorns account for more than 35.5 per cent of the school’s eligible varsity athletes achieving this prestigious status.
Women’s soccer, women’s hockey and women’s rugby each had 10 members reaching All-Canadian status, followed by men’s hockey and women's track with nine each.
“When we talk about pursing excellence in Pronghorn Athletics we have always envisioned that meaning something beyond winning the gold or taking home the trophy,” said Sport and Recreation Executive Director Ken McInnes in a statement. “We saw it as a commitment, a journey, to preparing our student athletes for success beyond their time here at the University and these Academic All-Canadians are our inspiration for what they have accomplished.”
The 2017-18 Pronghorn Academic AllCanadians are also recipients of the Deb Steacy AAC Scholarship.
Since the inception of the All-Canadian program in 1990, 1,057 Pronghorn varsity athletes have been named Academic AllCanadians.
The university recognized the studentathletes at a dinner hosted by University President Dr. Mike Mahon and his wife Maureen Tuesday.
