Chinook to host student leadership conference Building Bridges conference set for May
Chinook High School will be hosting a first-of-its-kind “Building Bridges” Alberta Student Leadership Conference in the city next spring. Organizers are expecting 800-900 highschool-age kids and their teachers to descend on Lethbridge for three days of breakout sessions, inspirational speakers and social networking opportunities.
“I think this event is important to promote growth and leadership in kids my age,” said Chinook Grade 12 student Amy Kim at the kickoff event for the “Building Bridges” conference held at Georgio’s restaurant on Friday. “It is important to have opportunities for kids to come to one central location with people who are likeminded to work on these skills and focus on those talents.”
Chinook leadership teacher Ard Biesheuvel hopes the ASLC will not only be a great experience for the students attending the event from all over Alberta, but also be an opportunity to engage the broader Lethbridge community in helping to make this the best student leadership conference ever held in the city.
“We want to showcase Lethbridge,” said an enthusiastic Biesheuvel, “and make it where people go back and say, ‘Hey, that Lethbridge is a pretty nice place to be at. And they did a great job organizing this event.’ We can’t do that by ourselves. We need some community support. Our theme is ‘Building Bridges,’ and this (sponsorship drive) is part of that. We want to put on the Cadillac of conferences.”
