Horns hockey sweeps UBC

- LETHBRIDGE HERALD

Brett Campbell’s late-game heroics powered the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s hockey team to their fourth win of the season.

Campbell scored on the power play with 42 seconds left in regulation as the Pronghorns downed the UBC Thunderbirds 2-1 in Canada West play Friday night at Nicholas Sheran Arena.

Jodi Gentile added the other Horns goal in the win that improves them to 4-9-0-2 and within six points of the Regina Cougars for the final playoff spot.

The victory also snaps a sixgame losing streak.

The Thunderbirds are 6-3-33 and remain in third as the teams team play the rematch today at 2 p.m.

UBC opened the scoring on a goal from Hannah ClaytonCarroll 7:32 into the second before Gentile tied it 2:02 later with a precise wrist shot just above the glove of Thunderbirds goaltender Tory Micklash.

It stayed tied until late in the third when the Pronghorns went to the power play and took advantage in the last minute.

Parked in front of the Thunderbirds goal, Campbell deflected a shot from Alli Borrow past for the gamewinner.

Pronghorns goaltender Alicia Anderson made 37 saves.

In Vancouver Friday night, the Pronghorns men blanked the Thunderbirds 3-0.

Ryan Chynoweth, Connor Sanvido and Justin Valentino — with an emptynetter — scored for the Horns, who are now 5-9-1-0.

The teams are back at it today at 3 p.m., local time.
