Keep warm all winter with library’s help

- Jonathan Jarvie

The days are getting shorter and colder, and as much as we might like to pretend that it isn’t going to happen, it won’t be long and winter will be fully upon us. While we all wait for the warm chinook winds to thaw us from the winter cold, Lethbridge Public Library has some great ways for you to keep warm all winter long.

While visiting the library’s Main Branch, make sure to stop by the Page!Break Café, powered by The Hot Wire Panini. Open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on weekdays, the friendly staff will warm your spirit, while their menu will warm your body. With daily soup specials and a weekly panini special, you’ll be sure to find something warm and delicious to enjoy on your visit.

When the winter days get cold, what better way to keep warm and cosy than with some hand-knit winter wear? Check out our In Stitches knitting groups that run from 1–3 p.m. on Tuesdays at the Main Branch and Saturdays at The Crossings Branch. You will have the opportunity to meet new friends while working on your own knitting or crochet project. If you don’t know how to knit or crochet, don’t worry! The members of our friendly knitting groups would love to help you learn.

Perhaps one of the most effective ways of dealing with winter is to simply enjoy it. For those of us who like getting outside and being active during the winter months, the library has the perfect solution for adventuring out into the snow: snowshoes! Available at both the Main Branch and The Crossings Branch, as well as the Bookmobile, Snowshoe Adventure Kits are ready for pick up in a variety of sizes. Each kit contains a pair of snowshoes (small, medium, or large), as well as a set of poles, and are available for checkouts of up to three weeks.

No matter how you choose to beat the cold, it’s important to stay healthy. With the short winter days, it can be hard to get the proper amount of sunlight to avoid getting sick. If you feel like you’re missing out on the sun’s nourishing rays, check out one of our Litebook Advantages. These light therapy devices are great for combating fatigue and low energy, and have been proven to help those suffering from the winter blues.

So remember, no matter how icy and dark the winter gets, a visit to the Lethbridge Public Library can warm and brighten your day.
