Wrestlers grapple way to medals

Another season of high school wrestling is back on the mat.

With that, 34 local wrestlers headed north to compete at the Wetaskiwin Classic this weekend, bringing home 26 top-three finishes.

In the Senior High Elite, Maren Evanson of LCI won gold, while Autumn Carter of Chinook took silver.

Angelina Ellis-Toddington (Chinook), Hayden Devoy (Catholic Central) and Sophie Strong (LCI) brought home bronze medals.

The Senior High Novice mined two gold medals for the locals.

Ellis-Toddington and John Winchester of Catholic Central each took top spot.

Autumn Carter (Chinook), Mckenzie Midgley (Winston Churchill), Sam Hironaka (LCI) and Camille Bly (LCI) won silver medals.

In the Junior High category Blessing Diyaolu (Senator Joyce Fairbairn), Danica Harris (Senator Joyce Fairbairn), Millie Wood (LCI), Rawley Selk (LCI), Jada Bester (LCI) and Marius Sanchez (Chinook) were gold medallists.

LCI’s Briggs Butler and Brooklyn Duncan, Gilbert Patterson’s Tamryn Bly, Porter Gook of G.S. Lakie and Katelyn Teyke of Winston Churchill won silver medals and Peyton Shields (Gilbert Patterson) and Saul Brewerton (G.S. Lakie) took home bronze.

In the Elementary division, Emmy Selk of Senator Joyce Fairbairn and Addy Selk of Dr. Gerald Probe also won bronze medals.

The tournament followed the Alberta School categories with elementary athletes up to Grade 6, junior high including Grades 7-9 and high school going from Grades 10-12.

The LCI Green and Gold Tournament takes place Friday and Saturday.

It starts Friday at 6 p.m. with the Junior High competition and continues Saturday starting at 10 a.m. with the Senior High tournament.

The club will have its 2018 National Championship medallists scheduled to compete for their schools.

Ellis-Toddington is the U17 Greco Roman champion, while Brantley Saar is the U17 freestyle silver medallist.

Greco Roman silver medallist and Maren Evanson is the U19 freestyle silver medallist.
