LRC women going for CRU crown

- Dale Woodard LETHBRIDGE HERALD

Perfect attendance has led to a perfect record for the Lethbridge Rugby Club Senior Women’s team.

Today in Calgary, they’ll look for the perfect ending as they battle for this year’s Calgary Rugby Union title.

Having captured top spot in the CRU regular season with a 6-0 record, the LRC will face the Calgary Rams RFC at noon for the CRU hardware.

A championship win today will cap off a summer where roster numbers haven’t been an issue for the LRC women.

“This has been one of our best years for women’s participation in respect to them training,” said LRC coach Rory McKeown. “So it was really fortunate for us because you’re able to work on the systems. With a sport like rugby where people are paying to play you obviously can’t force people to come to the club. So you lose continuity a lot of times dealing with different people. But this year it was really good. The girls have been pretty heavily involved and they are reaping the rewards.”

The last reward awaits this afternoon as the LRC clash with the 3-3 Rams RFC, a team Lethbridge is 2-0 against this season.

“We had our last official training Thursday night and had really good numbers at practice and we’re just trying to keep them grounded,” said McKeown. “We beat the Rams twice already this season, but no matter what you never play the same team each time. The Rams are a bigger club, so depending on availability and things like that, you never know.”

The LRC men’s division II game against the Red Deer Titans today at the LRC has been cancelled with Red Deer unable to bring a full roster.

However, there will still be a little rugby at the Lethbridge Rugby Club as a Rookie Rugby camp takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Run through the Lethbridge Sports Council and Alberta Junior Rugby, the event is free for families and participants of all ages to come out and learn the basics of rugby from skilled coaches.

The Lethbridge Sports Council and Alberta Junior Rugby staff will be on hand to talk with parents and answer any questions about the sport.

After the instruction segment, a lunch will be served from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.
