Horns hockey facing tough tests

- LETHBRIDGE HERALD

The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s hockey team looks to shrug off a losing streak and climb back into the Canada West playoff race.

However, it won’t be an easy task as the Horns host the 13-6-1-0 Alberta Pandas in Canada West play tonight at 7 p.m. at Nicholas Sheran and at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

The Pronghorns men have an equally tough task as the travel to Edmonton this weekend to face the

Golden Bears tonight and Saturday.

After an 0-2 trek in Saskatoon against the Saskatchewan Huskies, the Pronghorns women have lost six in a row. That puts them seventh place in the Canada West at 6-10-1-3, three points behind the Regina Cougars and UBC Thunderbirds for the sixth-and-final playoff spot with eight games to go.

The Pronghorns head into the weekend looking for some of the firepower they displayed early in the season.

During their losing streak, the Pronghorns have not scored more than two goals in a game and have dropped into a tie for fourth in goal scoring with 35. The Pronghorns have also allowed a conference-high 51 goals-against.

Senior goalie Alicia Anderson continues to climb up the Canada West career games played list for goaltenders. She enters the weekend with 113 appearances, third on the list and only five games behind former Pronghorn Crystal Patterson for most games played all-time.

Anderson has a 2.24 goals against average and a 0.929 save percentage this season.

Kyra Greig leads the Pronghorns in scoring with five goals and nine assists in 20 games.

Earlier this season, the Pronghorns and Pandas split a two-game set in Edmonton with the Pandas winning 3-1 and the Pronghorns returning the favour 2-1.

The Pronghorns men (5-14-1) have lost four in a row to start the second semester of Canada West play and will have to deal with the U SPORTS secondranked and defending Canada West Champion Golden Bears (17-3-0) at 7 p.m. both nights.

Still, the Pronghorns are only three points behind the Regina Cougars for the final playoff spot with eight games to play.

The Horns power play is second in the Canada West at 23.4 per cent. Lethbridge is fifth in penalty-killing at 23.4 per cent.

Freshman Luke Coleman leads the Pronghorns with eight goals and 13 points. Landon Gross and Brooks Maxwell — with five goals and seven assists each — sit one point back.

All games will be streamed live on
