Allied Arts Council offering variety of initiatives

- Greg Bobinec LETHBRIDGE HERALD

With community art centres closed due to physical distancing measures, The Allied Arts Council of Lethbridge has harnessed the creative powers of their staff to reach out beyond the walls of Casa, with a variety of initiatives.

Each Monday, and soon to be Thursdays, the AAC is posting Artist Spotlights on its social media pages to give the public a deeper connection with the artists in their community. Lethbridge artists, musicians, writers, poets, actors and singers across all disciplines are eligible to participate. Artists wanting to be included can email galleryassistant@artslethbridge.org.

Every Tuesday, starting on May 5, the AAC and Casa will be hosting online art classes aimed at kids six-12 years of age on YouTube at noon. A limited number of free art kits will be made available to help families that may not have supplies at home.

On Wednesdays, the AAC social media is all about art documentaries with a local mini documentary about themes and exhibitions in Lethbridge. In the evenings, starting today, the AAC will be Keeping it Real: Art Docs from Around the World on

YouTube at 7 p.m. International directors have given them permission for special screenings on YouTube. Each movie will be screened once and then removed.

Thursday, May 7 at 6 p.m., will see the return of ART/WORK: Professional Development with Proposal Writing given by Mary-Anne McTrowe in partnership with ATB Entrepreneur Centre. This webinar will let artists of all skill levels and disciplines plan for the future by working on their resumes, biographies and portfolios. This will be available on Zoom, with a link posted on the AAC Facebook.

On Fridays, the AAC is asking people to share the art they live with every day in compelling collections features on social media. Any Lethbridge resident can submit a short cellphone video of their favourite piece of original art in the homes.

Debuting this Saturday, Isolation Art

Tour YQL will be starting, where residents on weekends go for a drive around town and take in art shared in windows and back alleys by local artists. Each weekend will be different and artists can add themselves to the map. AAC is asking participants to keep physical distancing and all traffic laws in mind when visiting neighbourhoods and seeing local art.
