Commemorating end of Second World War

-

The Royal Canadian Legion General Stewart Branch No. 4 and representatives of other local service organizations placed a wreath at Lethbridge Cenotaph on Friday morning to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of The Second World War in Europe.

“It’s a privilege for me as president on behalf of our members to conduct this simple act of remembrance. We want to give our thanks to those who participated in WW2,” said Legion president Michael Cormican in a news release.

Promoting Remembrance is part of The Royal Canadian Legion’s mission and has been one of the principal objectives since its inception. The small gesture is a visible public reminder and is one of many acts of Remembrance across Canada in community ceremonies big and small. Each is equally important to foster a sense of pride and pass on to the youth of the past military service, sacrifice and commitments Canadians have made both at home and overseas and to those who continue to make in the defence of Canada, the release said.

“COVID-19 has impacted the regular operation of our commemorative services, programs and activities. Recognizing the COVID-19 Alberta government guidelines for public gatherings, the Legion has organized a small delegation following social distancing guidelines,” said Cormican. “When the situation with COVID-19 is resolved, and the associated risks greatly diminished, the Legion will organize a future commemorative activity. The Legion thanks Canadians for their support of our veterans and their families, and our communities during this challenging time.”
