SACPA to discuss temporary foreign workers and COVID-19

The Southern Alberta Council on Public Affairs will be exploring how the COVID19 pandemic has created additional issues for Canada’s temporary foreign workers on Thursday, live on their YouTube channel.

Speaker Marco Luciano, director of Migrante Alberta, will explain his advocacy role in bringing these and many other issues facing temporary foreign workers and others to the attention of the government, corporations and employers, while arguing it should not take a serious pandemic or health emergency to implement safe working conditions for any and all employees.

Uninsured individuals in Alberta and Canada are often denied access to health care and can face huge costs to get treatment. Luciano says the concerns are that these barriers to health care already have had public health implications in the context of COVID-19. Uninsured persons can include newly landed permanent residents, temporary foreign workers, international students and undocumented residents. Luciano wants to bring awareness to COVID-19 assessments centres and related care should arguably be accessible to all people, regardless of immigration status during the pandemic.

To take part in this week’s SACPA presentation and discussion, visit their YouTube channel Thursday at 10 a.m. Participants wanting to ask questions must have an activated account to send in live questions. For more information, visit sacpa.ca.
