Man pleads guilty, sentenced to obstructing a peace officer

- Delon Shurtz LETHBRIDGE HERALD

Tryggvi Williamson tried to run, but he couldn’t hide.

Lethbridge police began searching for Williamson March 11 after they began investigating a disturbance and attempted theft in the city. Officers spoke to complainants and received a description of the accused and a licence plate number, and they were waiting for their suspect when he arrived at a residence on the westside.

Police watched as Williamson, who was wanted on a number of outstanding warrants, drove up to the residence. They activated the police vehicle’s emergency lights as Williamson pulled up to the house, and pinned his vehicle in so he couldn’t escape. But when Williamson got out of his vehicle and police told him he was under arrest, he ran into the house.

One officer was hot on his heels, however, and stuck his foot in the front door to prevent Williamson from closing it. Another officer joined him and they arrested the suspect.

Williamson pleaded guilty Thursday in Lethbridge provincial court to one count of obstructing a peace officer, and was sentenced to seven days in jail. And although he was given full credit for time already spent in custody, effectively concluding his sentence, he wasn’t released because he still faces additional charges of housebreaking, attempted housebreaking and mischief causing damage.

The accused returns to court on those charges next Thursday, while he is scheduled Monday to set a trial date for a single charge of unlawfully being in a dwelling.
