Blue Jays pour it on

Danny Jansen hit two solo homers and Cavan Biggio scored three runs as the Toronto Blue Jays dumped the New York Yankees 14-1 on Wednesday night to move closer to nailing down a playoff spot.

Jansen had four hits and scored three times as the Blue Jays used an eight-run sixth inning to put the game out of reach. Toronto (29-27) trimmed its magic number to one and can secure its first post-season berth since 2016 with a win in today’s series finale at Sahlen Field.

Randal Grichuk scored twice and Lourdes Gurriel Jr., had three hits for Toronto. Starter Robbie Ray was effective over four-plus innings and A.J. Cole threw a scoreless fifth inning for the win.

Under Major League Baseball’s expanded playoff structure, 16 teams will reach the post-season. Division winners will be seeded No. 1 through No. 3 in each league.
