Lethbridge Conservative Association donates turkeys to food banks
Some local families in need will get a Thanksgiving turkey dinner thanks to a tasty donation. The Lethbridge Conservative Association, led by president Catherine Furukawa, stopped by the Lethbridge Food Bank Society and the Interfaith Food Bank Wednesday morning to drop off 50 frozen turkeys — 25 at each location — to help feed some families this Thanksgiving weekend.
Furukawa said this initiative allowed people to make their own turkey purchase, but also the chance to give back as well.
“We offered the opportunity to those who wanted to donate to not only purchase a turkey for themselves, but to purchase one for the food banks as well as part of their donation.
“I think Lethbridge has proven time and time again that it is a generous community in how it supports the not-for-profits in the city,” said Furukawa. “As we were doing a fundraiser for ourselves we also wanted to give an opportunity for people to give back. Obviously, this year has been a unique year for many individuals and businesses and we just felt it was really important in a community and at a time when people are struggling to give people the opportunity to not only give to our organizations, but to other organizations in need as well.”
With Thanksgiving right around the corner, the Lethbridge Conservative Association’s donation is perfectly timed, said Danielle McIntyre, executive director with the
Interfaith Food Bank Society of Lethbridge.
“It’s the time to be thankful and for us to allow our families to celebrate safely at home together. So we’re very grateful to the Conservative Association and Rachael Harder’s office for making this gift today. We just know our families are going to be extremely happy to receive such a nice meal for Thanksgiving.”
The Interfaith Food Bank has hampers with five to seven days worth of food, said McIntyre.
“So at Thanksgiving we try to throw in seasonal turkeys if we have them available. So this is great timing because we’ll have families coming in the next couple of days that will go home with turkeys for Thanksgiving.”
