New films hit city screens

Three new to the city movies opening on our screens this weekend.

The first film is a well-done indie by the name of “Hope Gap.” It has a couple of wellknown actors and is set in a beautiful countryside. It is rated 14A with a coarse language warning and runs 101 minutes in length. It will show daily at 12 and 6:10 p.m.

“Grace (Annette Bening) and Edward (Bill Nighy) married for 29 years, live in a small seaside town near a cove under the cliffs called Hope Gap. When their son Jamie (Josh O’Connor) comes to visit for the weekend, Edward informs him that he plans to leave Grace, that same day.”

“‘Hope Gap’ tracks the unravelling of three lives, through stages of shock, disbelief and anger, to a resolution of sorts. There are no villains; only good people who have lived too long with old mistakes and are now paying the price. There are no easy answers, and no simple paths to redemption. A husband, a wife, a son are forced to face hard truths, and out of those truths to fashion new lives. In the end, ‘Hope Gap’ is a story of survival.” — Transmission Films.

The next film is a new animated family feature entitled “Over the Moon.” It is rated General and is 95 minutes long. It will show daily at 12:30,

3:40 and 6:20 p.m.

“Fuelled with determination and a passion for science, a bright young girl builds a rocket ship to the moon to prove the existence of a legendary moon goddess. There she ends up on an unexpected quest and discovers a whimsical land of fantastical creatures. Directed by animation legend Glen Keane, and produced by Gennie Rim and Peilin Chou, ‘Over the Moon’ is an exhilarating musical adventure about moving forward, embracing the unexpected, and the power of imagination.” — Netflix Films.

Finally, we have a film produced by Lethbridge’s very own Gianna Isabella. “Curse of Aubrey Earnshaw” is rated 14A with a violence and coarse language warning. It is 93 minutes in length and will play daily at 3:10 and 9:10 p.m. (for one week only).

“An isolated and devout community ravaged by a plague becomes increasingly suspicious of a woman and her beautiful daughter who remains untouched by any disease. As tensions and anger mount, the townsfolk confront the mother and daughter whom they believe have made a pact with the devil in order to achieve their riches.” — Epic Pictures.

Something for everyone this week at the movies!
