New comedies opening at Movie Mill

- Leonard Binning Leonard Binning operates the Movie Mill and is a past president of the Motion Picture Theatre Assoc. of Alberta. His column appears Thursdays.

I just finished digesting the new regulations implemented by our provincial government, and I am breathing a sigh of relief. Fortunately, movie theatres if they comply with regulations, can continue to operate at 25 per cent capacity (we had reduced that to 35 per cent). That means our small theatres can accommodate almost 30 people and our large theatres almost 50 with lots of room to socially distance. I am pleased to note that not a single case of COVID has been associated with any theatre in the entire world (as of this writing). We are adhering to “CineSafe{ and local health protocols striving to make the valued experience safe. I know that many who have attended in recent weeks have expressed the comfort and satisfaction with their experience.

Two more brand new comedies open at our theatre starting Friday. I believe that many of us could use something to bring a smile to our faces, considering current circumstances. “The Kid Detective” is a little gem out of Canada that tells the quirky story of a once celebrated kid detective. This film is rated 14A with a Mature Subject Matter warning and is 97 minutes long. It will show daily at 3:20 and 9:10 p.m.

“A once-celebrated kid detective, now 31, continues to solve the same trivial mysteries between hangovers and bouts of self-pity. But a naive client brings him his first adult case — to find out who brutally murdered her boyfriend.” — Sony Pictures.

The other film that makes its debut is entitled “The Climb,” a story of two lifelong pals test the boundaries of their friendship when a woman comes between them. This film is also rated 14A and carries a Mature Subject Matter warning. It has a length of 94 minutes. This film will show daily at 6:20 and 8:50 p.m.

“Kyle and Mike are best friends who share a close bond — until Mike sleeps with Kyle's fiancée. The Climb is about a tumultuous but enduring relationship between two men across many years of laughter, heartbreak, and rage. It is also the story of reallife best friends who turn their profound connection into a rich, humane and frequently uproarious film about the boundaries (or lack thereof ) in all close friendships.” — Sony Pictures.

Please consider enjoying a safe outing to your local theatre — we promise to do our very best to ensure your time will be safe and enjoyable. Above all — stay safe everyone. Hope to see you at the movie theatre!
