What’s new in fiction at the public library?

- Caroline Moynihan

One of the best parts of working at Lethbridge Public Library is getting to see, and read about all the new and amazing titles being published.

2020 has been a difficult year for the publishing industry, with many titles being pushed back until 2021, or cancelled altogether. There have, however, been some new non-fiction titles that have been truly wonderful, and I think worth checking out! Here are some of the most recent titles at Lethbridge Public Library. Get your holds in now!

“A Promised Land” by Barack Obama. In this deeply personal and candid memoir, Barack Obama reflects on how his own search for meaning brought him to his presidency, and how his belief in democracy is strengthened by the hope he sees in society.

“Paper Bullets” by Jeffery H. Jackson. This is a historical account of a daring anti-Nazi campaign undertaken by an unlikely pair: two French women, Lucy Schwob and Suzanne Malherbe, who drew on their skills as Parisian avant-garde artists to write and distribute “paper bullets” which were wicked insults against Hitler

“Hot Cheese” by Polina Chesnakova. Come on, who doesn’t love a good recipe that features the bubbly, oozing, melting, glorious cheese!? Check out the amazing Spinach, Artichoke and Leek Lasagna on page 84 for a real treat!

“One More Croissant for the Road” by Felicity Cloake. While we might not be able to travel right now, we can still live through amazing travel stories like this one. Part travelogue, part food memoir, and all love letter to France, this book follows France’s “taster in chief,” Felicity Cloake’s, very own Tour de France, cycling 2,300 kilometres across France in search of culinary excellence.

“Extraordinary Canadians” by Peter Mansbridge. In this collection of stories written by former CBC news journalist Peter Mansbridge, he highlights the great heroes of our country who are not the politicians, the moneymakers or celebrities. Rather the everyday heroes who show what our country is made of: the frontline nurses, the soldiers, the immigrants and others who have broken down barriers and faced personal struggles, yet still found the compassion to give back to their communities.

This is just a small selection of the great titles available at your Lethbridge Public Library. For even more choices talk to our library staff, and find out what they’re reading. You can also visit us online at www.lethlib.ca to search for even more great titles!
