Woman gets more jail time on other charges

- Delon Shurtz LETHBRIDGE HERALD

A woman who received a 45day jail sentence Dec. 8, then a 30-day sentence one week later, will remain in jail a little longer after pleading guilty Wednesday in Lethbridge provincial court to several more criminal charges.

Peggy Ann Holy Singer was sentenced to another six months in jail on charges of assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possession of stolen property over $5,000, possession of stolen property under $5,000, and assault.

Late last year, a Lethbridge resident told police his vehicle had been stolen after he left his keys sitting on his porch overnight. A man walked onto the porch, grabbed the keys and took off in the vehicle.

Police found the vehicle in a parking lot and noticed three people inside, all of whom fled on foot. They only made it a few feet before they were caught, however. Police found the keys to the vehicle and a can of bear spray in a hoodie belonging to Holy Singer.

On Oct. 1 a security officer caught Holy Singer stealing items from stores in the Park Place Mall, but when he and another security guard arrested her she pulled out a knife and swung it at one of the guards. She was "unceremoniously" taken to the ground and cut herself with the knife, which she had partly gripped by the blade, Crown Prosecutor Clayton Giles told court.

The security guards also found her in possession a small amount of carfentanil, and clothes stolen from a store.

Three days later Holy Singer, who had been in a relationship with another woman before it ended during the summer, got into a dispute with her exgirlfriend and struck her on the chin.

Holy Singer was sentenced to six months in jail for all the offences except the assault on her former girlfriend. She was given a 12-month suspended sentence for that charge and placed on probation, with a condition to stay away from the woman.

Lethbridge lawyer Claudia Connolly explained her client had been in a dysfunctional relationship and struggles with addictions, but has been dealing with her issues while in custody.

Connolly said Holy Singer plans to live with family in Calgary and to continue taking counselling.
