Man gets jail for various offences

- Delon Shurtz LETHBRIDGE HERALD

Hunter Ferdinand Nolte was looking a little thick around the waist when he fled from a city clothing store last summer.

Nolte, 34, had entered Old Navy Aug. 8 and put on a pair of jeans, but intead of paying for them, he took off. When he was caught later, he was wearing three pairs of jeans. The middle pair of jeans is the pair Nolte stole from Old Navy.

Nolte pleaded guilty last week in Lethbridge provincial court to one count of theft under $5,000, and to two charges of breaching release orders and one charge of possessing break-in tools.

Court was told Nolte had been placed on probation in June of 2018 after he served a 30-day sentence for possession of break-in tools and drug offences. After his release, however, he never reported to a probation officer as ordered.

He also breached a recognizance on which he was placed in August 2019 after he failed to report to police after he was released from custody.

On July 1 of 2019 Nolte was arrested on a warrant, during which police found bolt cutters and wire snips — break-in tools — inside a backpack. Crown Prosecutor Clayton Giles noted many of Nolte’s offences are for breaches, yet he chooses to simply "blow them off," when he knows he is required to abide by them.

Lethbridge lawyer Claudia Connolly told court her client suffers from addictions, which are the "root of his problems."

Nolte was sentenced to 60 days in jail, but given credit for the equivalent of 20 days in pre-trial custody, leaving 40 days for him to serve.

Nolte is also charged with single counts of Aggravated assault and disguised with intent stemming from an attack by several men on a 40year-old man Sept. 25 at a trailer park on the westside.

Police were called to an early-morning disturbance in the 2700 block of Westside Drive West, where they found a man suffering from serious and life-threatening injuries. Police said the incident was targeted, and the victim and suspects were known to each other.

In addition to Nolte, Nolan Shade, 24, Lucas Lycar, 30, Cory Amyotte, 33, and Jesse Davidson, 26, were also charged. Nolte returns to court on his charges Wednesday.
