Jon Stewart both wrote and directed this 2020 political comedy, casting his former “Daily Show” correspondent Steve Carell in the starring role of Gary Zimmer, a Democratic Party campaign consultant left shattered by the results of the 2016 presidential election. After watching a viral video of a retired Marine colonel (Chris Cooper) giving a passionate speech defending illegal immigrants, Gary flies to the man’s Wisconsin hometown to persuade him to enter a local political race.

It could be deemed the gender flip side of “Showgirls,” but director Steven Soderbergh’s effective 2012 drama about male strippers has more going for it — particularly its basis in the actual experiences of star Channing Tatum. Here, he plays mentor to someone just entering the trade (Alex Pettyfer), and there’s plentiful bumping and grinding. And less-than-plentiful clothing. Matthew McConaughey, and Joe Manganiello also star.
It Was Always You
