Colts upset Pythons in playoff game

-

Parkside’s Pythons may have won the season series against Medicine Hat’s Colts bantam football team, but it’s the Colts moving on after a 26-0 playoff win Thursday.

At the Methanex Bowl, Piercen Meyer ran 85 yards for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage, then the Colts defence stepped up to keep the Pythons at bay.

“It’s not often you put up zero,” noted Colts coach Chris Perret. “They played from the first kickoff right through.

“It was more about stopping their 22 (Kalen Rieger) and 25 (Tony Simmons). Our offence will take care of itself and we’ve got some talent there, but it was more about stopping (them). Their backs are very tough.”

Rieger and Simmons had bright spots, but Parkside could never sustain drives in a game that featured dozens of turnovers, primarily on downs but also some more conventional fumbles.

“I think these guys learned a valuable lesson today, which was you’ve got to play the game, instead of deciding the outcome before it starts,” said Pythons coach Lloyd Bray. “You’ve got to come out and play hard.”

The early score from Meyer was a sign of things to come. Fellow running back Elic Ayomanor went 55 yards for a score later in the first quarter, then Meyer had touchdown runs of 28 and three yards in the second half.

While Bray gave his team the traditional post-season talk, Perret’s team goes on to Brooks next Friday for the league final. The Roadrunners are undefeated, but then again the Colts hadn’t beat the Pythons before, either.

“They were definitely motivated for that reason,” Perret said of the prior losses to Parkside. “They came out to play when it mattered.”
