Redcliff council met Monday night for its third meeting of 2017, and for what will likely be its fastest meeting of the year.

The meeting ran for just 27 minutes, which Mayor Ernie Reimer said can be partially attributed to the town running “fairly smoothly” to start the New Year.

Bylaw readings

At the beginning of the meeting council was faced with a motion to pass the initial three readings for two potential bylaws.

Members needed three unanimous votes to pass each bylaw reading, but councillor Eric Solberg only voted in favour of two readings for each bylaw.

“I just have a few more questions on these bylaws and I just want them to go through one more meeting,” he said. “I want to make sure the public does not have any more questions on these and I don’t think going right through them in one reading is a good idea — I don’t want to just blow through this, that’s where you can run into problems down the line.”

School bus parking

The other important topic on the night revolved around an existing school bus parking bylaw.

Council discussed this topic at length on whether buses should be able to park on residential land or in alley ways in the town.

Reimer says when parked in residential areas, the buses can pose problems.

“We’ve discussed this in the past but the buses can be an issue on residential roads,” he said. “They’re very large and are hard to see past, so if a child is playing behind one, the driver and the child cannot see each other — it’s just a problem with vision.”

Coun. Dwight Kilpatrick says the buses can just be frustrating for homeowners.

“No one wants a bus parked in front of their home,” he said during the meeting. “They take up a lot of space, and make parking on the road a lot harder.”

Reimer says the best-case scenario would be for the buses to have a private lot in town to park at overnight.

Council will meet next on Feb. 28.
