Being a teenage pop star has its perks. Just ask Justin Bieber.

Christian Lalama may not be at that level, but he’s sure enjoying the ride he’s been on in the last couple of years, especially since joining Mini Pop Kids about one year ago.

“Being in Mini Pop has been really fun and a really good experience,” he said this week. “I hope to be able to do it for as long as possible.”

Lalama has hit the ground running with Mini Pop Kids. He’s spent the better part of the past year recording for the “Mini Pop Kids 14” album. It was just released along with some music videos. Lalama worked on songs like “Don’t Let Me Down” and “24K Magic.” In the video for the latter, Lalama has one of the two starring roles.

Lalama is just now getting out and performing regularly and the two shows in Medicine Hat on Feb. 24 will be among his first. There is a very limited number of tickets still available for the 3:30 and 6:30 p.m. shows.

The 13-year-old has been playing music since he was four, but in the last few years has begun to take it more seriously. He joined a band that got the chance to open for Canada’s Kim Mitchell and then earned a spot with Mini Pop Kids.

Performing today’s pop songs, you’d think one of those would be Lalama’s favourites. But his favourite song is about three times as old as him. It’s “Roxanne” by The Police.

“I just love to mess around with that song,” he said. “I’ve played it for so long and it’s just been such a fun song to play and perform.”

Tickets, $20, plus service charge and GST, are available at www.tixx.ca, by calling 403502-8777 or in person at the Esplanade box office or the Medicine Hat Mall customer service desk.
