Colts boys take South Zone title
Four Medicine Hat high school basketball teams are going to provincials this week, but only one as a South Zone champion.
The McCoy Colts boys already had a ticket to 3A provincials as the hosts, but cemented their spot with a gutsy 85-82 win over WR Myers Saturday night.
At McCoy, the Colts still didn’t have their leading scorer Jace Anton due to a broken jaw but got huge contributions from Francis Villar (26 points) and Cole Fandrick (17 points, eight rebounds) according to the box scorer posted on the team’s website.
Up 11 after a quarter, the lead was 17 entering the fourth but Myers, which beat McCoy a week earlier to win the local league title, wasn’t ready to quit. They nearly stole the banner, coming up just short.
Both teams will go to provincials, which start Thursday at the Family Leisure Centre and Crescent Heights. McCoy is the host for both boys and girls tournaments, even though no games will take place in their gym.
The Colts boys, seeded fifth, play No. 12 Morinville at noon Thursday at Crescent Heights. The girls, seeded second, get a firstround bye and play the winner of Strathmore and Strathcona Friday at noon at the Family Leisure Centre.
Hat High’s Mohawks and Kwahommies are back in Lethbridge for 4A provincials after each winning bronze at their respective zone tournaments Saturday. The girls play St. Albert in their first matchup while the boys have drawn Jasper Place out of Edmonton, both slated for Thursday night.
