Cast of McCoy’s ‘13’ in it together in story and life
Drama students at Monsignor McCoy High School are getting ready to show off the musical they’ve been busy perfecting.
The musical is called “13,” and runs for roughly 90 minutes and will show on March 30 and 31 as well as April 1, with shows beginning at 7 p.m. Drama teacher Pat Weisgerber has been working with the students on the play, and he says he cannot wait for show time.
“‘13’ is a story we’re portraying through a high-energy musical — we’re very excited to start our shows,” he said. “It is about the lessons you learn in life and it’s about growing up and how that can be fun and difficult in different ways.
Though the show has plenty of comedic elements, Weisgerber says the underlying themes and messages it portrays are meant to have a deeper meaning.
“One of the most important parts of the story I feel is that no matter what our differences, or what the world throws at us, when it comes down to it we’re all in this together and we should support one another,” he said.
Another impressive part of the play is that it is largely student-run, says Weisgerber, something he has wanted from the start.
“While I am the teacher of the program, my view from the start was for it to be as student-led and student-run as possible,” he said. “The students are involved in everything from the lights, the sound and even stage management.”
With 23 students involved in the musical, the experience levels differ greatly says Weisgerber.
“Some of the students are drama students and others are other parts of the school,” he said. “We have some students having their first time on stage, some first time leads, and some with plenty of experience — it’s a nice mix.”
