New coins for Canada 150

- Ron Schmidt

Before I start about the new coins for this year I would like to remind readers about the travelling coin and silver dealers that appeared on March 11 at a city hotel. For those of you who may have attended I hope that you got prices before you went. I attended and they offered me only a percentage of what the market place is paying, including our local dealers and collectors. I did not have time to caution people, but hopefully the word is spreading through local shows and these columns that people should be aware of what coins are worth before they sell to the travelling dealers.

Throughout 2017 you will find a whole new and exciting variety of coins being issued as this is the 150 anniversary of Canada. The first to be issued was the premium proof set which sold out very quickly. Following that came the silver dollar 150, the classic uncirculated set, and the four gift sets: Wedding, Baby, Birthday, and Oh Canada. These coins all came out with the regular design similar to past years, with the exception of the gift sets which had the special loon pertaining to the set.

In 2017 the circulation coins will have different designs drawn by Canadian people and was voted on by the public. This process was started a few years ago and final results were drawn on the coins. The first set showing these coins was the already talked about silver set. Just released was a 12-coin set in a cardboard holder featuring the old design coins along with the new design, with the exception of the 50 cent coin. Another set issued was a folder with five coins, with coloured design on the toonie and quarter. There is also an eight-coin set with the plane and coloured coins, all with new design, but had the new design of the 50-cent coin within it. The $3 silver coin also has the Canada 150 design on it, retail value of $19.95. The second series of proof set and silver dollar has now been released. The proof silver set depicting the anniversary of Canadian Confederation and the silver dollars both with a different design of the first set.

I would like to make a suggestion that if there is a coin or set that interests you, I would go to your coin dealer and pick it up as these coins are selling very fast, or have your name put on a list for when it comes in.

Another location in which you may be able to find these coins is at our Spring Coin & Stamp Show and Sale on April 8 at Higdon Hall (Stampede grounds) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The 40 tables of coins and stamps are all legitimate vendors form all over Alberta and Saskatchewan. Some of these vendors are the same ones you see in Calgary, Edmonton, Regina and Winnipeg. For those more serious collectors you may find the rare and hard to find coins. You are also very welcome to bring your coins or stamps in to have them appraised (time permitting however, afternoon may be better for this, as long as you do not have too many). If you are not a collector and would just like to see all the different coins and stamps, we also welcome you.

Collector’s Corner is contributed by the Medicine Hat Coin & Stamp Club. For questions or comments about coin or stamp collection email medhatcsc@live.com
