Hounds earn peewee A title

-

There’s a provincial championship banner ready to be hung up thanks to Medicine Hat’s peewee A Hounds.

The Hounds capped a dominant weekend in Lloydminster with an 8-2 win over Sherwood Park Sunday. Medicine Hat won all six of its games in the Border City.

Tyler Broesky had a hat trick including one shorthanded in a decisive final that saw the Hounds up 6-0 mid-way through the second period. Taiga Hernandez had two of his own, while Wyatt Bishop, Kaden Pahl and Jeffrey Bullock had the others.

Hernandez finished the tournament with an incredible 20 points, while he and Broesky each had 10 goals. Medicine Hat beat St. Albert 4-1 in the semifinals, plus wins over Springbank (4-2), High Prairie (10-1), Fort Saskatchewan (8-2) and Beaumont (11-1) in the round robin.

Bantam

Medicine Hat was a goal short in both games of the Central Alberta Hockey League’s bantam Tier 1 finals, which was to say they were deserving finalists even though the Canmore Eagles get the banner.

Canmore won 5-4 Friday and 6-5 Saturday to sweep the best-of-three series, each time getting the game-winner in the third period.

Lukas Herter’s hat trick Friday made things close for the visitors, while Ryoma Hernandez also scored and goalie Jordan Hieb turned aside 30 shots. But a hat trick goal from William Chisholm with 14:21 left held up for the Eagles.

On Saturday Blake Winter tied things up with 13:23 remaining, only to have Taiki Kawano break the tie with his second of the game two minutes later. Gage Reimer made 32 saves, Rylan Hoffner scored twice and both Herter and Hunter Chase added singles, but it was Canmore skating away with the series win.

Peewee AA

Tyler Miller was named the South Central Alberta Hockey League’s top defenceman in the peewee AA ranks following the league finals last week.

Miller, whose leadership, strong skating and scoring and mindset were all mentioned by coach Rob Kinch as reasons why he was deserving, was a co-winner. His 21 goals and 23 assists in 33 games put him sixth in team scoring.

Medicine Hat was upset in league playdowns. Red Deer won the league title over Lethbridge and advance to provincials.

At the Cow Bell Tournament, the Wildcats beat an unnamed team 7-0 in their final, which is essentially a third-place game. A Calgary team took the A final.
