A man who bilked his mother and grandmother for more than $5,000 was sentenced to 97 days in jail Wednesday.

Morgan Williams appeared by CCTV from the Medicine Hat Remand Centre to enter guilty pleas to a number of charges — ranging from shoplifting, using stolen credit card data, breaching no contact orders — which resulted in fines totalling $1,300.

Williams also pled guilty to an incident last September, where credit and debit cards were taken from his mother. An ensuing investigation by police led to them finding Williams had made $1,200 worth of transactions with the cards. Around the same time, William’s grandmother’s debit and credit cards were also stolen, and it was found that Williams had used these cards and forged signatures on stolen cheques to obtain $4,358 in funds.

Overall, these charges led to a 90 day sentence, with another seven days added on for Williams failing to appear a few weeks ago in court for his sentencing.

NYE homicide

Legal counsel for Luke Boxell, one of two men charged with second-degree murder following a homicide on New Year’s Eve, was granted an adjournment to April 28.

Counsel saying it looks like a multi-day preliminary inquiry will be needed for the case, so a date for that will have to be set up.

Boxell was arrested in January over the death of Jordan Pede. He was granted bail on March 21 under strict conditions, including 24/7 house arrest while residing with family in Manitoba.

Boxell’s co-accused, Leonard Robert Terence Beaulieu, who is also charged with second-degree murder and remains in custody has his next court date set for April 20.

Unlawfully at larges

Two separate men were given additional time in jail due to breaches and being unlawfully at large for failing to report for their weekend sentences.

Raymond Needham entered guilty pleas to being unlawfully at large, breaches and failing to report to probation for incidents that stretch back to the start of 2017. Needham was sentenced to a total of 141 more days of jailtime, although he has nine days of debt time that can be applied as credit.

Christopher Munro pled guilty to missing one weekend of his sentence, not reporting to police and breaches — which landed the 26 year old a sentence of 60 days, of which he has 54 days left to serve.
