Instant rebates at stores when Albertans purchase a range of high-efficiency home products will take effect Friday.

From April 28 to June 11 there will be instant rebates such as $30 off a programmable thermostat, and anything from $2 to $100 on items such as LED lighting, motion sensors, water saving devices and smart power bars, the provincial government announced on Tuesday.

The rebates will be available from a range of retail outlets across the province including Canadian Tire, Best Buy, Co-op, Costco, Home Depot, Home Hardware, London Drugs, Peavey Mart, Rona, Sears, Visions Electronics and Walmart.

A full list of all participating retail stores and details of the rebates is available online.

“Our government is helping Albertans save and making life more affordable. Energy efficiency is creating jobs and a new industry while putting money in Albertans’ pockets,” said Environment Minister Shannon Phillips.

During the life span of these energy-efficient products, the government’s investment will deliver $45.4 million in cost savings on utility bills for participating households.

The government’s investment of $8.5 million from the carbon tax in the Residential Retail Products Program will generate nearly 250,000 gigajoules of saved energy, said Phillips. This is equal to the energy needs of 1,675 homes for a one-year period. This produces more than 307,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents, which is roughly equal to removing 41,000 personal vehicles from the road for one year.

Eligible products include a $3 rebate on LED Lighting (Aline) ENERGY STAR® certified, single pack, $15 on LED fixtures and LED recessed downlight fixtures, $30 on a programmable thermostat, $4 on a lighting dimmer, $5 on a hardwired motion sensor, $18 on a smart power bar, $12 on an outdoor clothesline, from $2 to $17 on low flow faucets and showerheads.

From April 28 rebates between $75 and $100 are also available online on certain refrigerators and washing machines. A home improvement rebate includes up to $3,500 for insulation in the attic above grade walls and basements, up to $1500 on ENERGYSTAR Triple Glaze, Low-E, Argon windows, and on ENERGYSTAR tankless hot water heaters.

A second six-week retail campaign will be offered in the fall.

There are three components to Energy Efficiency Alberta’s Residential Retail Products Program: Home Improvement Rebates where you can buy eligible products and have them installed by a certified contractor to receive rebates. Instant rebates where you can receive instant point-of-sale rebates on eligible products and online rebates for certain items such as clothes washing machines. And refrigerators that meet certain criteria.

There is also funding available at the municipal level through HatSmart.

You can receive up to $500 depending on the level of RValue for attic insulation, half the cost up to a maximum of $500 on drain water heat recovery and $1,000 per kW to a maximum of $5,000 for solar electric.

Rebates are available to all City of Medicine Hat residential utility customers. There are new requirements for attic insulation and the solar electric rebate application process.

The deadline for applications is Jan, 5, 2018. All programs are first come, first served, before funding runs out.
