Medicine Hat’s McGough drafted by Tiger Cats at fourth overall in CFL draft

Medicine Hat’s Connor McGough is officially a Hamilton Tiger Cat.

The Crescent Heights Vikings alumnus was selected by the Ticats at fourth overall in the first round of Sunday’s CFL draft after a stellar season with the University of Calgary Dinos.

McGough, who was unavailabl­e for comment Sunday night, recorded 31 tackles — 22 of which were solo — and four sacks in 10 games as a defensive lineman with the Dinos last season — a year that culminated in a 31-26 Vanier Cup final loss to the Laval Rouge et Or.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers for Iowa defensive lineman Faith Ekakitie with the first overall pick in the draft.

The 6-foot-1, 304-pound Brampton, Ont. product registered 37 tackles — including 21 solo — in 13 games with the Big Ten conference’s Iowa Hawkeyes.

The Saskatchew­an Roughrider­s took UCLA linebacker Cameron Judge with the second overall pick, then the B.C. Lions went for McMaster wide receiver Daniel Vandervoor­t before Hamilton selected McGough at fourth.

The Edmonton Eskimos took Carleton receiver Nathaniel Behar at fifth, the Calgary Stampeders took Gannon defensive lineman Randy Colling at sixth and B.C. selected Montreal defensive lineman Junior Luke at seventh.

Manitoba offensive lineman Geoff Gray went to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at No. 8, then the Ottawa Redblacks picked Saskatchew­an offensive lineman Evan Johnson to close out the first round.
