Mayor Reimer will seek re-election in Redcliff
REDCLIFF Redcliff Mayor Ernie Reimer has made it official. He will be seeking re-election come October.
Elected first in 2013, the 69year-old feels he and council have done a good job, but does not feel as if he has finished the job.
“In a lot of ways I feel like we have righted the ship and have the town running on all cylinders,” he said. “With that said, I want to see some projects through and I want to keep the town going in the right direction.”
Reimer says he did take some time to decide whether to run again, but has his wife’s full support on the decision.
Book talk
A representative from the Redcliff Public Library spoke briefly with council Monday, updating it on a wide range of topics.
“We have been trying to reach more of the community recently,” said board member Catharine Richardson. “We’re trying to get some feedback on what people would like to see in the library, as well as what services they want to see from us.”
Richardson says the library will start using tools like social media to engage more with people.
She also said the library will be adding mobile charging stations so patrons can charge their electronics.
Old is gold
When faced with the choice to implement electronic votecounting for the October election, council said ‘no thanks’ to the roughly $8,000 fee that would come with it. Still, Reimer says he was surprised by this choice.
“It took me back a bit,” he said. “I just thought this was more of a getting with the times sort of thing. There’s also the issue of having to manually recount votes — it can be a very long night of not knowing who won.”
With approximately 1,200 votes counted last election, multiple councillors raised the issue of spending the money to count each vote electronically.
COPS funding
The Citizen’s on Patrol Society wrote a letter to council asking to be funded for $3,118.
After some discussion, council put forth the motion to pay the $3,118 over the span of two years, with money coming from the $5,000 council set aside at the beginning of the year to fund various groups and projects it saw fit.
“This is a group that does good things in our community,” said Coun. Larry Leipert. “This groups acts as another set of eyes and ears over the town, so funding this is important.”
Reimer said the plan is to set aside $5,000 at the beginning of each calendar year to re-up the funding account.
