Local superheroes come out to support SPCA
A large group of Hatters gathered Saturday, many of them dressed as their favourite superheroes, to walk their pets in unison in support of the Medicine Hat SPCA.
The event marked the 25th annual Dog Jog held by the SPCA, but this year it was called the Super Hero Fun Walk/Run. Though the name was different, the goal remained the same said one of the organizers Kristina Segall.
“This annual event is aimed at raising money for the SPCA,” she said. “Our goal this year is to reach $10,000 and I’m really hoping we can achieve that.”
After the walk finished, people and their pets were able to take part in events such as face and paw painting, an obstacle course and a chance to hang out with four super heroes: Captain America, Batman, Spiderman and Super Woman. Segall said the name change came as a way to put on a twist on a long-standing event.
“We just decided to spice things up a little for the 25th anniversary,” she said. “Going forward it may be superheroes again, but it could be something different next year.”
Segall said it is important for people to support events like this to keep the SPCA as an active part of the community.
“The SPCA runs off of donations and it offers many important services to the community,” she said. “Things like our low-cost spay and neuter program would not be around if it were not for generous people.”
The event was held outside of the new Pet Valu store in Crescent Heights.
