Berard-Shand takes top of street outlaw class to open drag racing season

Adam Berard-Shand is the current king of the Gas City street outlaw class, but his crown will remain up for grabs all summer long.

That’s what drives the newly installed class, introduced at the Medicine Hat Drag Racing Associatio­n’s season opener and topped by Berard-Shand this weekend. The series will run all summer long, with a ladder of competing drivers gunning for each other’s spots.

Brooke Hawker won Saturday’s electronic­s class, besting Dave Burden for the victory. Harry Svingen took the victory in the non-electronic­s class, while Fritz Jagert settled for second.

Steve Campbell cruised to victory in the pro-bike event, beating Jim Garinger for the top spot.

Mason Bell took the junior street event, with Victoria Philbert finishing in second. Cole Cardon took Saturday’s junior thunder event, while Kindi Opsal stepped in to win Sunday’s event.

Kyle Wagenaar took the junior lightning victory on both Saturday and Sunday, while Brandon Peck won the junior storm class on Sunday.

Sunday’s pro-bike class featured a win from Clayton Potter, who bested Kevin Miller to earn the victory.

Kathie Achambault won Sunday’s sportsman class, taking the top spot from runner up Rory Van-Derburg.

Jason Hughes took the win from Perry Bell Sunday’s pro event, while Terry Opsal topped the super pro class and Jason Kendel settled for second.

Racing returns to the Medicine Hat drag strip June 9 and 10 for Street Wheelers weekend.
