Dozens advance to provincials

-

Plenty of Medicine Hat and area athletes earned spots at provincials thanks to their performances at the South Zone track and field championships in Lethbridge Thursday.

A few even set zone records, and a handful claimed individual aggregate titles.

Hat High ran away, sometimes literally, with the 4A banner while Crescent Heights took the 3A title in a close competition with Lethbridge Collegiate.

Leading the Mohawks were a trio of aggregate winners. Junior Joshua Suelzle won his division thanks to gold in discus and silver in shot put and javelin. Ethan Suelzle won the intermediate title with event wins in 100 metre hurdles and silver in long jump and triple jump. And Blake Carriere-Smith tied Winston Churchill’s Brayden Klippenstein for senior aggregate by winning the 100 metre, 200 metre and 100 metre hurdles.

Rhiannon Ware of Hat High was among the record breakers, winning the intermediate girls 80 metre hurdles in a time of 11.90 seconds. The Mohawks’ 4x400 relay teams each set records. Alexandra Stanke, Cait MacMillan, Olivia Hunter and Natasha McGraw won the open girls race in 4:50.60, while Jaxson May, Zachary Campbell, Parker Davidson and Landon Swartz won the boys race in 3:51.58.

Capping the record haul off, Savannah Zee’s time of 52.31 seconds was a new record in girls 300 metre hurdles.
