Alexandra wins aggregate title at Medicine Hat junior high city track and field meet

-

Alexandra Middle School emerged victorious at the Medicine Hat city junior high meet Wednesday after a windy day at Rotary Track.

Alexandra took the aggregate team title with 330 points, 49 ahead of Notre Dame and 57 ahead of St. Mary’s.

Tough weather conditions made things difficult on the athletes and the organizers, but with berths to next week’s South Zone championships on the line there was no stopping the top finishers. The top two in each event (except for relays) moved on to Tuesday’s meet, also at Rotary Track.

Alexandra only had one individual aggregate champion, that being Orin May in juvenile (Grade 9) boys. May was part of gold medal-winning 4x100 and 4x400 metre relay teams, after winning all three (100, 200 and 400) sprints plus the 100 metre hurdles. He put up 28 points on his own towards the team title.

Matching May in points was midget (Grade 8) boys aggregate champion Elic Ayomanor of Notre Dame. Ayomanor won the 100, 200 and 400 sprints then claimed a long jump gold before helping a 4x100 team to silver.

Seven Persons’ Tesema Veurink claimed the bantam boys (Grade 7) aggregate title.

On the girls’ side, Seven Persons’ Montana Wright won shot put, discus and javelin to give her the added title of juvenile aggregate champ. St. Mary’s teammates Claire Holt and Kiana Farrell shared the midget aggregate title, each with 25 points, then teamed up for a 4x100 relay win. Farrell won the 200 and 400 sprints and long jump and was third in 80 metre hurdles. Holt won the hurdles race, triple jump and discus, and was third in long jump. Notre Dame’s Abree Toews took the bantam girls aggregate.

A dozen schools took part in the day-long event.
