Seniors Week - June 5 –11, 2017

In 2017, we will celebrate Seniors Week June 5-11 to acknowledg­e the contributi­ons of seniors to our communitie­s. Whether it’s their time, talent or life experience, seniors’ contributi­ons are at the heart of many community programs and charitable organizati­ons that improve quality of life for all Albertans. Join us at the Strathcona Centre for a week of fun activities for all seniors in Medicine Hat. No membership required.

Join us Monday, June 5 at 9 a.m. at the Strathcona Centre for a walk on the berm. Ann Pudwell will open the session with a discussion on falls safety and active living and will also discuss walkabilit­y and the charter for walking. Gregg Campbell will do an Urban Poling Demonstrat­ion and attendees are welcome to come and try out a set of poles. Free draw and free new city maps for those in attendance. Tuesday, June 6 we will have a plantings event. Come bring any old jar(s) and meet at the Bistro in the Strathcona Centre at 10 a.m. and start a mini herb garden.

101 Things to Do When You Retire Expo: This will be a great opportunit­y to discover things to do in Medicine Hat that you may not have considered. From volunteeri­ng, to clubs, sports and arts opportunit­ies, this will be the place to find your niche and enrich your retirement experience! Come to Strathcona Centre, Wednesday, June 7 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

How could a fit-bit help with fitness goals? Is there an app that would motivate you to move more? Join us Thursday, June 8 at 10:30 a.m. in the Strathcona Centre for a presentati­on by Sean Swaren (Fitness Leader from the Family Leisure Centre) about technology and fitness.

Gregg Campbell will also lead a mini-fitness class. Come find out what adding a little technology could do for your health. To register call 403-5298307.

Friday is guaranteed to be a fun time at the Backyard BBQ. Come for the food: a delicious BBQ will take place at the back of the Strathcona Centre. Then stay for the fun: Revera will be sponsoring games, door prizes and funnel cakes. The party starts at 11:30 a.m. See you there.

Wellness Wednesday June 21, 10 a.m. - South Auditorium

Join us for a presentati­on by the Medicine Hat Fire Department on Fire Prevention and Safety for Seniors. This program will discuss eight fire safety tips and eight fall prevention tips.

On the fire side we will talk about space heaters, kitchen safety, smoke alarms, smoking and medical oxygen, and planning escape routes among other things.

When it comes to falls we will go over some basic tips on how to set up your living area to reduce the chance of falls. Register by calling 403-5298307

Meals for Men by Meadowland­s

Are you a gentleman who lives alone? If so, please join us on Monday June 5, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at Meadowland­s. This month’s menu is Shepherd’s Pie and Biscuits.

We will make a meal to enjoy together and you will take four meals home. Cost is $10.
