Hitch your wagons to this year’s Stampede
We have a great wagon committee with an interest in old wagons and an excitement in them being used. In 2015, we celebrated Heritage and Horses, which inspired volunteers to restore these wagons. You can see them at the parade, pancake breakfasts and they tour the Stampede grounds during the fair.
Some of these wagons were manufactured by Macleod’s and Adam’s Wagons, made for and sold by Cockshutt Plow Co. Ltd.
The ice wagon delivered ice around Medicine Hat. It actually delivered ice that was harvested from the South Saskatchewan River to local Medicine Hatters to keep the food in their ice boxes cold. This wagon was used in the legendary 1996 cattle drive across the British Block. It trekked across the Prairies in 100-degree heat for five days.
The chuckwagon has been restored from original and was also used in a trail ride across the British Block in the early 2000s. The chuck was restored from original and is a truly beautiful piece of our Western history.
Our wagon committee’s goal is to have three restored grain wagons all pulled in tandem, with a four-horse hitch at the 100th annual parade and throughout the grounds.
Ron Edwards and the wagon committee would like to thank the Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede Board for their investment in the preservation of the history and the future of our variety of wagons, including a doctor’s buggy, buckboard, ice wagon, chuckwagon, and three restored grain wagons.
